Finding Your People: A Community Workshop – is a new powerful educational resource designed to supply 2SLGBTQ+ youth the tools to build, nurture, and maintain strong supportive communities. Led by two celebrated community organizers, we cover topics like creating inclusive community culture, organizing accessible gatherings, navigating conflict, and relationship repair.
Strong communities have always been such an integral part of the queer culture and experience. Historically, community is a huge part of taking care of each other and protecting our rights. Unfortunately, we have seen growing sentiments amongst 2SLGBTQ+ youth and their trusted adults that they feel unequipped to connect with their peers, build long-lasting friendships, and create or organize within their community. A generation of youth were “stuck” at home during a formative time in their lives where they might have otherwise been building skills and practicing making connections and participating in community.
Through our school programming, It Gets Better Canada’s staff have received repeated feedback from educators and students alike that they lack the confidence and skills needed to engage meaningfully in social and community life. Whether it be small interpersonal conflicts derailing the advocacy projects of GSA’s or youth isolating themselves from their peers, these gaps in skill development have real effects on youth mental health and empowerment. Young people hold the power to shape our futures. We want to equip them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to shape futures where everyone feels welcome, safe and included in community with one another.
The workshop content was developed as a collaboration between It Gets Better Canada’s staff, our Youth Advisory Committee, and community experts. We translated the collective knowledge gathered through consultation with these groups into an interactive workshop centering video content featuring two youth community leaders sharing advice and encouragement directly to youth.
This workshop is available asynchronously online not only to ensure that resources are accessible to youth across the country, but also to reach youth who are not currently engaged in extra-curricular or community spaces. This low barrier approach is designed to provide support and encouragement to youth wherever they are.
The latest addition to our workshop offerings is now available at no cost through the “Workshops” page. To access it, visit the Workshops page, browse the current list of offerings, and select “Finding Your People: A Community-Building Workshop.” From there, simply follow the prompts to create an account and get started.
