Pride month is a time when people come together to celebrate the LGBTQIA2S+ community and raise awareness of the ongoing struggle for LGBTQIA2S+ rights and acceptance. It is typically observed in June, and it commemorates the Stonewall riots, a series of demonstrations by members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community in 1969 in response to a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City. In Canada, the observance of Pride Month in June commemorates Royal Assent to the decriminalization of homosexuality in June 1969.
The importance of Pride month lies in its ability to bring attention to the ongoing issues faced by LGBTQIA2S+ individuals and to provide a platform for their voices to be heard. It is a time when LGBTQIA2S+ people can feel proud of who they are, and it serves as a reminder that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. For Pride 2025, we’re emphasizing allyship for trans, nonbinary, agender, and gender fluid identities — communities that continue to face disproportionate marginalization and politicization.
Pride month also helps to raise awareness of the diverse experiences and struggles faced by different members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, including those who are marginalized due to their race, ethnicity, religion, disability, or socioeconomic status. It provides an opportunity for LGBTQIA2S+ allies to show their support and stand in solidarity with the community.
This Pride month, we at GHD are supporting LGBTQIA2S+ youth in our “Ice Out Intolerance” campaign through three different branches of It Gets Better in the countries of our Americas operations: It Gets Better Canada in Canada, It Gets Better in the US and Todo Mejora in Chile.
