All I had was endless questions, and just when I thought I had grabbed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">onto an answer, it crumbled like sand and misted through my fingers. Everything <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was still granular when I started identifying as nonbinary, but not transgender. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonbinary is a general identifier term for those who identify themselves outside the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conventional gender binary. Transgender, or trans for short, is another identifying <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">term for anyone who does not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth. I <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found the term nonbinary fit me when I realised my queerness distanced me from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the gender I was assigned at birth. But did that necessarily mean I was trans? So in the venn diagram, there are people who can identify as trans but not nonbinary, nonbinary but not trans, and both trans and nonbinary. To make it even more clear, people that are trans but not nonbinary do not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth, but do identify on the gender binary as a man or woman. People who are nonbinary but cisgender do not identify themselves in the traditional gender binary, but still identify to some degree with the gender they were assigned at birth. As a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonbinary trans person I struggled with the question, \u201cam I \u2018trans enough\u2019 to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medically transition?\u201d The narratives of gender dysphoria and transitioning I had <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been exposed to earlier in my life were never outside the gender binary. But the idea <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of being \u201ctrans enough\u201d is problematic because it implies a medicalist approach to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transness that reinforces a narrative that trans people need to be fixed, and acts as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a gatekeeper to the trans community. By letting that idea go, we refuse to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">participate in the systems that oppress and limit us. Instead, we choose to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celebrate all the diverse expressions of our gender identities, including those that fall into the gender binary and those that don\u2019t. In my personal gender journey, this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meant recognizing that I did need to transition medically to affirm my gender <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identity, even if what I was transitioning towards wasn\u2019t a familiar destination to a lot <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of people.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3bc79cd elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"3bc79cd\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-613c6b2\" data-id=\"613c6b2\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-54b7085 elementor-headline--style-highlight elementor-widget elementor-widget-animated-headline\" data-id=\"54b7085\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;marker&quot;:&quot;curly&quot;,&quot;highlighted_text&quot;:&quot;feels right for me.&quot;,&quot;headline_style&quot;:&quot;highlight&quot;,&quot;loop&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;,&quot;highlight_animation_duration&quot;:1200,&quot;highlight_iteration_delay&quot;:8000}\" data-widget_type=\"animated-headline.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-headline\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-headline-plain-text elementor-headline-text-wrapper\">I am allowed to be who I am and affirm myself in a way that<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-headline-dynamic-wrapper elementor-headline-text-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-headline-dynamic-text elementor-headline-text-active\">feels right for me.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-32e8ede elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"32e8ede\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-fde6933\" data-id=\"fde6933\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e06427b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e06427b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another question I have been asked a lot is \u201cwho gets to identify as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonbinary?\u201d Gender is culturally constructed and thus reinforces gender norms. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you identify as nonbinary just on the basis that you disagree with the construct <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of gender conceptually? I would argue yes, but with a caveat. I say yes because it is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">better to create expansive rather than narrow understandings of gender identity. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonbinary, after all, is an umbrella term, and is meant to encompass all gender <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identities that diverge from convention. <\/span><b>The caveat is that because of everyone\u2019s <\/b><b>different experiences with gender, we must make sure that we both tell our story but <\/b><b>also listen to other people\u2019s experiences.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For instance, it&#8217;s important to recognize <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that cisgender nonbinary people will not experience gender dysphoria, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discrimination, and other challenges trans people face in their day to day life. Also, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transmasc people might not experience transmisogyny the way transfemme people <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-8e0b872 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"8e0b872\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">As a group, we must make the space to both represent our own experiences and ensure we make room to uplift other experiences, especially those that usually are unheard.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-29a2db7 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"29a2db7\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-cc2125e\" data-id=\"cc2125e\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7f807a1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7f807a1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal here is to imagine an expansive collective identity for trans people <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and nonbinary people. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can all take our individual shifty, sandy, gender <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">questions and come together to build sandcastles where we can support and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celebrate each other for the royal people that we are.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-acc5cb5 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"acc5cb5\" data-element_type=\"section\"
