GLO is an exciting new 2SLGBTQI+ youth-focused mobile application designed to empower users with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate online digital channels. Youth select their very own GLO pet to nurture and style as they are guided through various educational journeys, supporting their mental health and wellbeing.
GLO is a 100% FREE app with zero ads or in-app purchases. This youth-focused and youth-led app allows you to build a relationship with your own colourful GLO pet, while also gaining education and tips which support youth mental health and wellbeing. The app interface is super colourful, fun and engaging, and playing on a mobile app has never been more supportive and beneficial for queer youth.
GLO was created after It Gets Better Canada experienced an influx of online hate on our social channels last year. As the only national charity focused on supporting 2SLGBGTQI+ youth, we realized that we are not alone in experiencing this increased backlash targeting the queer community. Through working with our Youth Network across the country, we learned that there is a direct need for mental health supports for youth which feel accessible, approachable and fun. With that in mind, we developed the concept for GLO, an app to support and empower 2SLGBTQI+ youth as they navigate online spaces in a fun and safe way.
GLO was created by the team at It Gets Better Canada in collaboration with Montreal-based design firm, LG2. GLO was made possible through funding from the Department of Women and Gender Equality (WAGE). Throughout the creation process, IGBC consulted our wide-ranging Youth Network to gain feedback and recommendations from queer youth to directly tailor the app to their needs, interests and goals.
Users are welcomed into a colourful, fantastic arcade world, where they select their very own GLO pet. After naming their GLO pet, users are led through different, themed journeys and activities, gaining valuable knowledge and tools to navigate real-world topics like social media, online hate, communication, misinformation and more. Along the way, users unlock scores of prizes for the GLO pet, allowing them to customize and dress up their little creature as it grows and evolves, just like queer youth do.
